On your exterior door, you may have a deadbolt lock or a chain lock. A chain lock won’t hold up like a quality deadbolt system will, so the best thing to do is to buy and install a quality deadbolt. Having a spare key can be very handy, especially when you can’t find yours. However, they should not be placed in obvious areas outside your door. It would be like giving a burglar a free pass into your house.
Even pet doors can be a potential way to your house. Burglars have been known to be able to reach through the pet door and unlock the door from the inside, however, it would take them a little extra time to get in. So, if your able to, get a small enough pet door where your pet can get in, but the burglar can’t. These are just a few simple things you can do to further reduce the risk of burglars getting into your home.
