Kids love to play on a playground, and you would like to think that they are safe there, but sadly there are hundreds of thousands of children hurt on playgrounds every year in the US alone. It is especially dangerous if equipment is poorly maintained. There are some basic guidelines that need to be followed to make sure that the risk of injury is minimal.
Starting from the ground where the playground is located, it should be covered in soft material. It is not appropriate to have cement or asphalt cover since this can make injuries worse in the case of a fall.
Equipment should be inspected for rot, rust and missing hardware regularly. If there are any points where fingers could be pinched between moving parts, there should be a cover installed.
To keep swings from smacking together, they should be at least 2 feet apart. There should also be at least 30 inches between the swings and the frame.
